MODERN PRIMITIVES // Eric Silva + Robert Brady

MEET & GREET WITH ERIC SILVA: Saturday, June 17th from 1-5PM

ERIC SILVA JEWELRY + ROBERT BRADY SCULPTURE
JUNE 17TH - JULY 30TH, 2023

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents MODERN PRIMITIVES, our next show featuring the work of Eric Silva Jewelry and Robert Brady Sculpture.

The works in this show capture the raw creativity of these artists.  Eric and Robert create pieces using natural elements and found objects combined with non-precious and semi-precious materials.  Historical references to time and other cultures permeate throughout their work.

If 'Primitive Modernism' were a movement, these two would both be members.

OHANA - Hoops + Bangles, Paintings by Cathy Liu

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents OHANA a summer show to feed our souls. We are all feeling ready for a true summer; beaches, sunsets and some serious relaxation after last year. But are we really ready to travel and adventure out into the world again? The past year has made us dream of the carefree life and the innocence we once had about health and loved ones. We may value our pods more and may have a new sense of who our true 'ohana' is after 2020.

We have always loved the Hawaiian term ohana because its meaning of 'family' extends outside of the people you are related to. The idea that anyone can become family is one of the strikingly beautiful aspects of Hawaiian culture.

For summer, we have curated Hoops + Bangles from our Shibumi artists. It's the carefree jewelry that you can easily put on, layer and never take off. Who doesn’t love a new hoop or a bangle to wear all summer long.

Alongside the jewelry, Shibumi will also feature artwork and paintings by Cathy Liu. Her art pieces convey 'malama pono' another Hawaiian term which translates to "take care". However, the deeper meaning is take care of your light (soul) which she describes as the intent of all her work.

So take a short journey to visit our summer show at Shibumi. Or come by to pick out something to take with you on your summer travels.

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents FLORA & FAUNA, opening March 20, 2021, to welcome the first day of Spring.

Nature has always been a distinct and driving source of inspiration for many of the artists who show with Shibumi Gallery. And during the pandemic not only have we appreciated the grounding force of nature and its beauty and tranquility, but the outdoors has also offered us some of the only safe spaces for connecting with family, friends and loved ones.

With spring comes new beginnings and as nature starts its quiet determination to bud forth again, Flora & Fauna pays homage not only to nature for its ability to inspire, but also for the shelter and haven it has offered us during these times.

Please visit us in the gallery through the end of April to see this inspiring show which bridges the genres of jewelry, sculpture and painting. More will be posted online in the following weeks.

The Silk Road; Tales of the Exotic

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents The Silk Road; Tales of the Exotic.

Our 15th Annual Holiday group show is inspired by the period of trade between 130 BCE and up to the 19th century, when the acquisition of exotic materials required exhaustive travel, by horse or camel, across continents. Merchants would set forth for months of journeying in search of lapis, coral, jade, pearls, silk, spices, diamonds, sapphires, beryl, amber, rubies, camel bone, ceramics, embroidery, tiles, sand and woven textiles to acquire, sell, and trade. While The Silk Roads were an ancient network of trade routes between the East and West they disseminated more than just goods. These routes also led to and inspired exchanges of ideas, philosophies, literature, technologies and traditions of arts and crafts.

Today exotic goods are just an Internet search away. And while cars and planes have replaced horses and camels, dealers still travel to far off destinations in search of gems and new materials. While these gems and materials are more accessible than ever, each piece still has the unique story of its place of origin that often gets overlooked without the fascinating and evocative tales of travel to accompany them.

Please join us as we pay homage to The Silk Road, which continues to stir the imagination with its mysterious and romantic notions of new cultures, adventures and beautiful and unusual finds. Yet perhaps in the tradition of The Silk Roads’ greatest legacy, we invite you to our opening Saturday, 07 December, 5-9pm not only to peruse the jewelry and goods, but also to gather, perhaps make a new acquaintance, exchange an exotic tale or simply share an idea or two.

FLUX Nan Collymore - Jewelry & Artwork + Eric Silva - Jewelry

SHIBUMI GALLERY is pleased to announce Flux featuring works by artists Nan Collymore and Eric Silva.

Both artists’ aesthetic embraces an openness to nature and an appreciation of the irregularities of form. Their jewelry shares unique rough-hued qualities that can be seen in the textures, stones and silhouettes of each piece. The work, while balanced, refined and artful, retains an organic feel. With their distinctive sculptural shapes and one can almost imagine them as small maquettes for larger-scale art pieces. Alongside her jewelry, Nan Collymore will also be showing her ethereal stitched and crocheted wall sculptures made from yarn and wire.

NAN COLLYMORE primarily focuses on materiality and it's relationship to the body. Touch and affect play an important role in how she approaches each of her pieces. With this body of work Nan will show some of her new 14k gold pieces jewelry alongside her brass and textile work.

ERIC SILVA is a Los Angeles based designer. His work combines both natural and industrial materials in a small, thoughtfully constructed space. His designs highlight the often overlooked details found in daily life. He believes in the simplicity and integrity of the materials themselves, and for those who own his work, Eric affirms that a unique bond is forged between artist and owner. Silva is best known for his works with hand-carved shed antler and hand-made chains.

Dreamscapes - Giovanna Torrico + Shesaidred Photography Opening & Summer Open House

Shibumi Gallery presents Dreamscapes featuring Giovanna Torrico Jewelry and shesaidred Photography.

Giovanna's current body of work emerged from her past year of recovery and reflection following a back injury and the many hours spent reading, resting and the dreams that arose during those months. For this show Giovanna has cast her sequin jewelry into metal sculptures. The strange configurations have transformed the soft, lustrous materials into beautiful and grotesque sculptural rings and earrings. Shesaidred is the woman behind Giovanna’s beautiful look book photographs and her alluring photographs will be shown alongside of Giovanna’s work from her Mood, Memory, Myth, series.

Shibumi Gallery presents Lineage -The Birthstone Show.  Each birthstone, or the gem associated with one’s month of birth, has it’s own folklore and unique meaning.   When worn it is said to enhance the natural properties of the stone. Since ancient times it is widely believed that wearing one’s birthstone is a symbol of wellness and good fortune.  The tradition of wearing birthstones can be traced back to 1st century Roman-Jewish history in which Aaron was said to have worn a breastplate into battle for protection set with the 12 different stones. While the designated stones for each month have alternated over time based on cultures, eras and fashion, the tradition of wearing a stone to mark a birth has always remained.

Births and the connections that are created from family are strong. The desire to continue a bloodline can be fierce.  People have fought wars and married into families simply to secure their bloodlines.

And the connection between a mother and child can be miraculous and mind-boggling.  As a mother myself, I sometimes feel as if I somehow absorbed my son’s own DNA into mine during pregnancy.  It is a wondrous experience to become a mother; from watching my son who grew from me and inside me to seeing him evolve into his own unique little soul.

Like many others, I cherish the symbols that represent my family and those I am connected to. In honor of Mother’s Day and in celebration of all birthdays, at Shibumi Gallery we’ve decided to curate and dedicate a show to these gems which symbolize the creation of a lineage. Whatever the origin or actual properties the stone holds, a birthstone when given or bought expresses that you are special, loved and connected to a greater world.

As well as showcasing unique birthstone jewelry we will also feature raw stones and organic cuts along with ideas of how you can combine birthstones in a tasteful way to symbolize the people who are meaningful in your life or even to honor your own birth day.

The jewelry will be shown alongside clothing by Natyalya Egorova.  Her collection is tailored with draped details that flatteringly contour the body. The collection features soft silks in solid colored basics and hand-painted silk prints inspired by abstract sensibilities. The natural fibers used in the collection are sourced from sustainable mills. All pieces are hand-tailored and she has a love for the hook and eye closure detail in some of her work.

Join us for our 14th Annual Holiday show and Party:

Saturday, December 1, 2018

5:00 PM  9:00 PM

Shibumi Gallery presents our fourteenth annual holiday show, Curated Color.

Inspired by a recent documentary on the Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten, Curated Color will mix the beautiful with the unexpected to create a fresh, artful vision. For this show we will be grouping pieces in the gallery by color and texture rather than by artist and accenting these collections with colored fabrics and flowers. Imagine groups of rusts and reds or aquas and greens combined with woven, spiky and fringy textures and patterns. Shown alongside the jewelry will be works by printmaker Deborah Sibony, clothing by Ocelot, and perfumes by Sensate offering you an array of curated color and scents for your holidays.

We are very grateful for our dynamic community of Shibumi artists and the lovely, warm people it attracts. Please join us on Saturday Dec. 1st 5-9 pm for an evening of beauty, cheer, wine and light bites. We will be donating 10% of the evening’s proceeds to the California fire aid relief and the ACLU. We look forward to seeing you all!

Deborah Sibony’s aesthetics are rooted in her North African heritage and formative years growing up in Italy. Evoking memory and imagination, her work reflects the duality of tradition and modernity and explores physical and cultural boundaries – what crosses over and connects, what is repeated and what vanishes.

Ocelot Clothing is inspired by culture, landscape and tradition as well as by plants, the colors they yield and by the body and its relationship to nature. When layered, Ocelot becomes art on the body; moving, fluid and functional. Each garment goes through a several day process to create the dyed itajime patterns on natural fibers. All of Ocelot's clothing is hand-dyed in the Ocelot studio in Oakland.

Sensate Perfumes is an aromatic line driven by the senses, beauty, mystery and artistry of Jana Cerny. Her interest and work in healing the body and spirit has inspired her alchemy of natural botanicals. Through the ritual of application Jana believes we can draw forth our deeper selves which form part of a wide web of archetypes. Jana has created ‘Shibumi’ a scent inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of a subtle and unobtrusive beauty. This scent is a complex layering of patterns, textures and nuance that draw forth the world. Jana will also feature a small selection of her natural scents along with bath salts and body oils.

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents Consider the Pearl, 14 Sep – 21 Oct, 2018

Food writer MFK Fisher’s book Consider the Oyster is a loving tribute to these mollusks in which she includes a ‘recipe’ for making Japanese pearls. Ingredients required, amongst other things, include: one healthy spat, one mature oyster, an unnamable wound-astringent and a diving girl. Prep time: ten years with seven years close supervision and “about a one in twenty chance of owning a marketable pearl.”

With Fisher’s witty recipe illuminating the considerable time, labor and risks involved in making a pearl, it’s no wonder they are revered worldwide. These beautiful curiosities have always held a mysterious allure for both jewelers and wearers owing to the surface’s subtle glow from the nacre - the crystalline substance that creates its unique iridescent visual effect.

Consider the Pearl features six jewelers and a visual artist who, from different perspectives, explore the use of pearls in their work. April Higashi creates pieces that accent the organic nature of the pearl’s surface. Niki Ulehla uses cross-sections of pearls in her work revealing their inner nuclei and intricate layers. Kate Eickelberg contrasts the soft, natural beauty of pearls with industrial materials and architectural precision. Megan McGaffigan creates intimate and enigmatic pieces by interlacing tintypes with pearls. And visual artist Amy Tavern layers photographs and drawings with pearls that reference her interest in landscapes, both physical and emotional, and the ocean.

Along with the work of these and other artists, the gallery will feature Fred Sagues, owner of Black Market Pearls, a dealer from Tahiti and Asia who will be showing a selection of his gorgeous Tahitian and South Sea Pearls, both single loose pearls as well as strands. Fred will share his knowledge and his collection of pearls will be available to purchase for new commissions or future projects.

With Consider the Pearl, Shibumi will show how pearls can transcend the typical and be worn in a nontraditional manner. Feel free to bring in pearls you own that you’d like to transform into a contemporary showpiece or an everyday wearable statement.

Please join us for the opening and artists' reception with wine and light bites, September 15, 5-8pm.

Fred from Black Market Pearls will be in the gallery this Saturday 3 - 8pm.  Please come see his beautiful collection of pearls and hear more about the pearl farming.

Additionally, we will be offering wholesale appointments to other jewelers and artists on September 14, 11-3pm.  Please email info@shibumigallery.com if you’d like to come.
