Shibumi Gallery presents Dreamscapes featuring Giovanna Torrico Jewelry and shesaidred Photography.
Giovanna's current body of work emerged from her past year of recovery and reflection following a back injury and the many hours spent reading, resting and the dreams that arose during those months. For this show Giovanna has cast her sequin jewelry into metal sculptures. The strange configurations have transformed the soft, lustrous materials into beautiful and grotesque sculptural rings and earrings. Shesaidred is the woman behind Giovanna’s beautiful look book photographs and her alluring photographs will be shown alongside of Giovanna’s work from her Mood, Memory, Myth, series.
Giovanna Torrico's work with vintage sequins is the result of years of collecting and preserving these materials which she translates into contemporary jewelry. Suspended on steel wire and combined with a range of innovative elements, the sequins allow continuous movement while revealing their sculptural and aerial quality. These sequins, last cut in the 1930s, are precious and disappearing. Their exceptional shapes and the uniqueness of their size, color, and texture give Giovanna’s pieces a delicately organized architectural structure and aesthetic. Her collections are designed and hand-crafted in her Oakland, CA studio and include both limited edition and one of a kind pieces.
Shesaidred, is a photographer, filmmaker and artist known for her framed, dream-like cinematic stills. Her photographs are still shot on celluloid using 35mm to large format film cameras then taken into the traditional darkroom where they are individually hand crafted, resulting in unique prints. She was born and raised in Oregon by hard working Mexican immigrant parents. After initially training and practicing as a hairstylist, she became fascinated with the world of photography and filmmaking. When not in the darkroom or filming you’ll find her interpreting for the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and Labor Commissioner of San Francisco.
