Come meet the artists and join us for a glass of wine!

SHIBUMI presents Birds of a Feather, featuring jewelers Laura Leinhard and her mentor Daniela Boieri, alongside visual artist Renee Gertler.

All three artists share a visual language rooted in repetition, pattern, and airy, billowing forms, evoking a sense of harmony, beauty, and lightness.

Creative work, especially when made by hand, has the power to transport us into another world. It has been said that the hands function as a second brain, interpreting and expressing ideas as deeply as the mind itself. As Immanuel Kant observed, “Hands make thoughts and emotions visible through action.”

Jewelry making and painting are often solitary practices, allowing space for wandering thoughts, quiet contemplation, and imagination. In the work of these three artists, we can almost see their inner worlds, thoughts and ruminations, translated through the actions of the hand.

LAURA LEINHART
founded her jewelry studio after a successful twenty-year career in textile design, turning a highly trained eye from the patterns of the loom toward explorations in metal. Investigations into the interplay of pattern and structure define her work. Elements in her jewelry are derived from nature’s forms and textures as well as its surprises. Spontaneity and instinct lead to unique, often kinetic connections of hand fabricated elements that harken back to her textile roots. Crafted in a varying palette of 18K gold, silver, shibuichi and keum-boo Laura’s jewelry represents the transformation of nature’s raw beauty into personal expressions of elegance.

Laura has a BFA in Textile Design and an MFA in Industrial Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has attended intensive metal workshops at Haystack Mountain school of Crafts in Maine, Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and Alchimia Jewellery School in Florence Italy. Recently she has been studying with independently with a master jeweler and artist in the hills above Florence.

DANIELA BOIERI graduated in Jewelery, Costume Design and Fashion from the University of Florence in 2001 and specialized in contemporary jewelery at Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School, Florence from 2004 to 2007. She works as an independent jewelry artist, designer and teacher. Her jewelry is present internationally in various galleries and museums.

I work with metal because it’s an alive material, which requires knowledge, experience and does not allow for uncertainties. It needs rules, but it's also full of surprises. There's always a relationship in my work between inside and outside.Whether cylinders or cages, I always leave a space open. Open, free and at the same time protected. The surface of the metal is marked by textures and time.
