Karen Gilbert - Jewelry
06 June - 26 July, 2015

*Opening / Artist Reception:
Saturday 06 June,  5-8pm

Karen explores the origins of comfort and beauty. This body of work looks at multiple ideas and how they influence one another.  The result adds up to a story, one that can be twisted and turned by the addition of a new idea.

She plays with materials that range from the perceived precious - gold, silver, and gemstones - to those that result from experimental processes unearthed in the studio, and found materials - such as objects discovered while walking on a beach.

Her one-of-a-kind jewelry is art: meant to surprise the viewer, the wearer, and herself.

Karen Gilbert background is in glass and jewelry.  Her education includes, The California College of the Arts, University of San Francisco and The Pilchuck Glass School.  Her work is critically acclaimed and has been published internationally in books and periodicals, shown in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe, and acquired for multiple permanent collections.

Inner Worlds
November 15 - December 31, 2014
Opening & Artist Reception:
Saturday, November 15, 5-8pm

Inner Worlds references the often over-looked relationship between the human senses and our visual stimuli.  It is a rapport that can elicit feelings of beauty, peace, strength or inner tranquility and can be brought on by something as small as a reticulated stone, as immense as the night sky or by a chance encounter with a stranger who makes you take notice that the world is bigger than yourself.

This body of work contains portals to my visual interpretation of nature’s random and subtle beauty.  I hope these pieces might evoke a personal story or relationship we have with the environment and the world around us.

Strandline
September 6 - October 5, 2014
Opening & Artist Reception:
Saturday, September 06, 5-8pm

A strand line is a debris field left by the high water as the tide recedes. This mark is composed of organic material, as well as the whole spectrum of artificial detritus. The accumulation speaks to our culture of commodity, excess, and how it's entangled with the natural world. Strand Line brings together the perspective of Raïssa Bump as a jeweler with Jonathan Anzalone, a painter/woodworker, in an effort to call attention to subtle moments that are so easy to pass by.

Strand Line is a response to a culture that seems saturated with stimulation and full of preconceptions. A shared interest in form, materials, and process led to the exploration of the hanging mobile as common ground. This presentation enables a level playing field, dissolving hierarchy between parts. By eliminating this judgment, we hope to give one the opportunity to see the innate beauty in each part, and it's relationship to the whole.

Raïssa Bump studied jewelry at Rhode Island School of Design and Alchemia School of Contemporary Jewelry under Giampaolo Babetto.
She currently lives and works in San Francisco.

Jonathan Anzalone was born on Long Island, studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 2003.

He currently lives in San Francisco and works at his studio, Anzfer Farms.

Chain Reaction

April 20 - May 26, 2013
Artist Reception:
Saturday, April 20, 2013

This exhibition highlights two contemporary art jewelers and their approach to the chain and chain making.

With a background in textiles, Erica Schleuter uses fiber processes in her jewelry creations. She elevates the humble act of knitting and highlights the beauty of repetition.

Elliot Gaskin's body of work was inspired by the gates of the Chateau de Versailles. Combining darkened steel with yellow brass, he forges stylized chains which meld industrial craftsmanship with an ornate and extravagant aesthetic.

Julia Turner : Notation
Jewelry / Wall pieces
Condensed Show July 1-31, 2010

In her new work artist Julia Turner renders relationships as landscapes, and experiences as wordless text.  Scraped steel and painted wood provide the backdrop for "snapshots" or isolated samples of conflict, warmth, confusion, pleasure and doubt.  By inviting elements of chance into an otherwise highly restrained way of working, she is exploring competing impulses directly through her experience in making the work.

Julia has been a studio artist for 15 years. During this time she has created a highly diverse body of work including art jewelry and custom pieces as well as a limited production collection.  She has traveled and exhibited internationally and participated in symposia and residencies across the US and Europe.

Tina will be living in the Bay Area on a working sabbatical, a break from her teaching at Maine College of Art. Join us on Saturday to meet Tina and introduce her most wearable and elegant jewelry to Shibumi. Tina will share images of past and current projects and talk about her current installation project which will be shown at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Portland, Maine in late November 2009 and at SOFA NY in 2010.

As part of our human experience, we engage in the emotion of love in a variety ways. Though represented by one word in the English language, the term love is a stand in for a multitude of meanings, constantly contracting and expanding as societal norms regarding family, friendship and intimacy are defined and re-defined. Something About Love: A Three Part Affair responds to our tendency to group this multitude under one title and embraces a complex rather than singular representation. Approaching its concept from three artistic directions, Something About Love features photographic work by Ace Lerner, jewelry/sculpture with various artists, and personal belongings gathered from Bay Area artists and residents.
