Meet the Artist - Laura Lienhard

LAURA LIENHARD founded her jewelry studio after a successful twenty-year career in textile design, turning a highly trained eye from the patterns of the loom toward explorations in metal. Investigations into the interplay of pattern and structure define her work. Elements in her jewelry are derived from nature’s forms and textures as well as its surprises. Spontaneity and instinct lead to unique, often kinetic connections of hand fabricated elements that harken back to her textile roots.

TRANSFORMATIVE GROUND - Curtis Arima

  • 1816 Fourth Street Berkeley, CA, 94710 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

SHIBUMI GALLERY is pleased to present Transformative Ground featuring artist Curtis Arima. Curtis is not only a distinguished metal artist, but also Chair of the Jewelry & Metal Arts Program at California College of the Arts.

Curtis is known for his forged work, which focuses on botanical forms, nature’s beauty and fragility. With this show, Curtis explores the naissance of inspiration and creativity. Jewelry can identify cultures, represent spiritual beliefs, and celebrate personal bonds. Much of his practice delves into the nature of transformation, both literally and metaphorically. Curtis creates works of unusual beauty by deconstructing and reconstructing pieces of jewelry, creating compositions that resemble a snapshot in time - referencing both archaeology and geology.

WILDHEART - Lisa Ziff

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents WILDHEART - new work by Lisa Ziff. Some people are drawn into the wilderness, to the margins of the world, enchanted by the diversity and unbounded creativity of natural forces. Lisa Ziff is one such explorer. She’s a curious and keen observer of the living and the physical worlds whose work evokes a variety of geological, zoological and botanical forms: tentacles, spines, and shells; buds, carapaces and clouds; petals, pebbles and watercourses. Working from a unique texture or a microscopic close-up, Lisa carves magical worlds inspired by nature in her jewelry. The wild--the natural world--we feel is the most powerful inspiration anyone can pull from.

Jewelry is often given as a symbol of love, and we encourage and appreciate the practice of honoring someone dear. We know our clients are unique in their vision and create genuine memories in whatever way feels right to them. Valentine’s Day is an occasion to mark with authentic gifts, not Hallmark sentiments, so we offer you the subtle beauty of Lisa’s work, hand-carved and cast in 10k gold, at an irresistible price.

OHANA - Hoops + Bangles, Paintings by Cathy Liu

  • 1816 Fourth Street Berkeley, CA, 94710 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents OHANA a summer show to feed our souls. We are all feeling ready for a true summer; beaches, sunsets and some serious relaxation after last year. But are we really ready to travel and adventure out into the world again? The past year has made us dream of the carefree life and the innocence we once had about health and loved ones. We may value our pods more and may have a new sense of who our true 'ohana' is after 2020.

We have always loved the Hawaiian term ohana because its meaning of 'family' extends outside of the people you are related to. The idea that anyone can become family is one of the strikingly beautiful aspects of Hawaiian culture.

For summer, we have curated Hoops + Bangles from our Shibumi artists. It's the carefree jewelry that you can easily put on, layer and never take off. Who doesn’t love a new hoop or a bangle to wear all summer long.

Alongside the jewelry, Shibumi will also feature artwork and paintings by Cathy Liu. Her art pieces convey 'malama pono' another Hawaiian term which translates to "take care". However, the deeper meaning is take care of your light (soul) which she describes as the intent of all her work.

So take a short journey to visit our summer show at Shibumi. Or come by to pick out something to take with you on your summer travels.
